The Cloud: Advantages and Disadvantages

Cloud Storage is a service where data is remotely maintained, managed, and backed up. The service allows the users to store files online, so that they can access them from any location via the Internet. I t consists of massive farms of servers. The name derives from the fact that data and software are all delivered as a service over the Internet rather than as a product that sits in your hard drive. Let’s look into some of the advantages and disadvantages of Cloud Storage. Cloud Computing Advantages Cost efficiency –  The biggest reason behind shifting to cloud computing is that it takes considerably lesser cost than an on-premise technology. Now the companies need not store the data in disks anymore as the Cloud offers enormous space available saving money and resources of the companies. High Speed –  Cloud computing lets you deploy the service quickly in fewer clicks. This quick deployment lets you get the resources required for your ...

Improving the Interactivity in and Beyond the Classroom

In the classroom: I believe that one of the best methodologies to encourage participation and interaction in the Physics and Chemistry lessons in the POGIL methodology (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning). POGIL, is a learning methodology that seeks knowledge and skills in students through guided questions and is based on cooperative work in groups of students. It is a learning and laboratory technique that seeks content and skill development through key processes. It works in small groups (with or without role play) These materials provide the data and information that guide students to create their own knowledge and acquire skills related to the scientific method. The role of the teacher is to guide, observing and guiding, individually or collectively, students or groups of the class according to their specific needs. Here is a video of how POGIL works in the classroom. Advantages: It motivates students and teachers to provide immediate and co...

Physics and Chemistry Word Map

Here I leave you a Word Map for the Physics and Chemistry students of ESO.

English and ICT: Corpora

Corpora are websites that are based mainly on material collected from pages on the World Wide Web (some printed texts, such as academic journals, have been used to complement certain thematic areas). Represents all types of English, from literary novels and specialized magazines to spoken language. They are very useful to determine if an expression is correct and if it is usually used or not in the context that you are using. Parallel Corpora as Linguee also give you the translation of phrases with the searched term in different contexts. I had doubts about the preposition I should use with the word "related". I did not know which one, "related to" or "related with", was correct. In British National Corpus "related with" it only shows 8 results while "related to" shows more than 4000. It is obvious which is the correct expression.  "Related with" results:  "Related to" results: In  L...

English and ICT: Thesaurus

Thesaurus are dictionaries of synonyms and antonyms. It is common to find lists of antonyms and synonyms in online dictionaries, but if you need a more detailed description of each one and know which is the one that best fits in your context you can use them. On the website Thesaurus I searched for the term "accurate" , an adjective with two possible definitions. Thesaurus gives you for each definition a list of synonyms that you can sort by relevance or alphabetical order and filter the synonyms by level of complexity, length and formal or informal use. You can click on each of the synonyms and it takes you to the definition of the term and another list of synonyms which allows you to know which one best suits your context. It also includes below a list of  antonyms for that word. In my opinion, it is a good resource if you don't want to repeat the same word in your texts and expand your vocabulary.

English and ICT: Dictionaries

I'm going to do a comparison of some English dictionaries as a useful source of information for the students that are in a CLIL subject. In this comparison I have chosen the word "atom" due to it's importance in Physics and Chemistry. The results of the entries on the dictionaries are: Oxford Dictionary:  It includes a short principal definition of atom  followed by a large explanation and other uses of the word even minority uses in some regions or countries. It includes also a large amount of sentences with the term, a list of synonyms, the origin of the word and it's pronunciation. Webster Dictionary:  I think this website it's a more complete option than Oxford dictionary for CLIL students. In addition to the included in the oxford dictionary for the word atom , if you scroll the page it also has a section called "Did you know?" that gives a short encyclopedic information, a section with links to websites that have used this te...

CLIL in 2nd ESO Physics and Chemistry Classroom: Linguistic Needs

In this post I’m going to talk about the linguistic needs of the students that are studying Physics and Chemistry in 2nd ESO with a CLIL program. It is important to note that this is the first physics and chemistry course for the students, so this course will cover the bases and differences of physics and chemistry and the scientific method, as well as its implications. The curriculum of this subject divides the content in five blocks: The Scientific Activity The Matter The Changes The Movement and Forces The Electric Energy The linguistic exchanges that our students need would be:   Knowledge of the specific vocabulary for each unit and block: This is an important aspect due to the amount quantity of specific vocabulary in science and in many occasions also would be new vocabulary in their mother language. Students should be able to read and understand scientific text, scientist biographies and basic problems. Students should be able to descr...
